Current Business Problems (and Solutions) with Laurel Rutledge

I think it’s safe to say that given the topics of conversation out in the world these days, it was inevitable that at some point I would end up talking about AI on my podcast. And today is that day. 😆

Truth be told, I’m guessing this will be one of many conversations I have around this topic, as I doubt the debate around AI is likely to end anytime soon, nor should it–and for that reason alone I think it’s worth discussing in an ongoing way.

Ultimately, I’d love to get a few people on the podcast who have different views and expertise when it comes to AI (if you know someone who’d be a good fit, please connect us!), and I’m thrilled the first person I’m getting into some of this discussion with is returning guest and friend, Laurel Rutledge.

Spoiler Alert: neither of us is anti-AI in any way. In fact, I feel pretty confident in saying we are both looking for the opportunities that exist with AI, while also being aware that there are some potential risks.

AI isn’t going away, we all know this, so the real question is how do we mitigate the actual risks and separate out the things we are afraid of from the things that could potentially be a problem?

As tempting as it is to let our fear reign when it comes to something new and unknown, and as easy as it is to do in a case like this–thanks to decades of Science Fiction warning us about the AI overlords–the reality is our fear doesn’t represent any real possibilities. The ability to separate fact from fiction, to use our discernment to determine where it would benefit us to put some energy and where that energy won’t actually get the results we want, is imperative when there are this many unknowns at play.

And just as discernment will become a more and more important skill in the future, so too will the ability to see the nuance inside a situation.

One of the examples we talk about on this episode–and that, truthfully, I talk about with friends constantly these days–is in regard to the WGA and SAG/AFTRA strikes that are happening as of the date of publication.

The reason I keep going back to this example (and there are more details regarding this in the episode) is that not only does it highlight the need for us to be able to discern the opportunities to leverage AI from the risks associated with it, it also highlights the opportunity we have to recognize exploitation that already exists in a variety of industries. And maybe, just maybe, design a future based on a system with a little less exploitation already built into it.

Because the reality is, there will be inherent flaws in the systems we design and build always since we, as humans, are inherently flawed. Recognizing that will always be true allows us to consider what flaws we’re already aware of that we can correct for or balance out as we design a future system. And also, set up a system that is reviewed regularly, allowing us to course correct and make changes as needed.

Of course, now the problem lies in who is going to be in charge of or monitoring all of that…

Perhaps, a topic for a future episode.

In the meantime, this episode of the podcast is imperative. In it, Chief Navigation Officer™ Laurel Rutledge breaks down two of the biggest challenges in business today, as well as how to navigate them best.

Join us as we get into:

  • What you really need to know and be mindful of when it comes to AI

  • How we regulate the bad and exploit the good (embracing the tool as opposed to being fearful of it)

  • The current problem with HR/management and how we swing the pendulum back

  • How to have hard conversations and why it’s not unkind to be clear

  • Plus, so much more

This conversation, as my favorite ones do, will leave you with lots to think about and, hopefully, implement (to your benefit).
