Emotional Intelligence in Business with Dr. J.J. Kelly

One of my favourite things in life is when someone presents me with ideas I’ve never heard or thought of before, or challenges the way I’m thinking about something entirely. It’s not always the most comfortable moment to experience, when it happens, but it is jarring in the best possible way. That moment of pause, the rush of thoughts and feelings, and the subsequent intellectual “huh?” that happens, is something I want to experience as often as possible in this lifetime.

I have always believed it’s important to shake up our beliefs, the things that we hold to be true no matter what, especially the ones we have about ourselves and our identity. Not because I expect them to change regularly (although, it’s absolutely not a bad thing if they do) but, rather, because it enables us to reinforce and confirm the things that do matter to us and that we care about, while also questioning and releasing beliefs or ideas that no longer serve us.

In short, we get better at being, embracing, and celebrating who we really are – not what someone else thinks we should be, what we assume others want, or what society has told us to be

And the more we understand, and are confident and centred in ourselves, the better we get at understanding what drives us, what activates us, how we respond in different situations, what we are feeling and why, and, sometimes most importantly, how to express what we are feeling.

There’s a reason Emotional Intelligence starts with self-awareness (which should be a topic for another post entirely because I have thoughts about it and I’m sure my guest this week does as well)...

And, as important a reason it doesn’t end with self-awareness also.

Many of you will remember Dr. J.J. Kelly, my lovely friend and the esteemed Punk Rock Doc from a previous episode. She and I never seem to run out of things to talk about so she’s back to discuss Emotional Intelligence, the importance of rethinking our beliefs, and a whole host of other things, including:

🤘 Affection outside of romantic and familial relationships

🤘 What to do with thoughts and feelings that "aren't allowed"

🤘 What defensiveness is and how it hurts us

🤘 Why it's important to be challenged and rethink our beliefs

🤘 How shame and fear (often) rule our lives

J.J. says, “We respect people who rethink because it’s growth in action and yet, as individuals, we struggle to do it.”

She also invites us into being fully ourselves, liking ourselves more, and to be role models of true leadership out in the world.

As I'm sure you can tell, she’s awesome and this conversation is so entertaining! I hope you'll join us.

*And, full disclosure, she’ll definitely be back again! Her energy is infectious and I’m always down to get real and vulnerable with her.
